A story of legacy and love

Paris-born and raised designer Laura Gallon shares a love story with her great-grandparents, her family heritage and her passion for jewelry. And what better time to share her heartfelt story than before Valentine’s Day.

The Laura Gallon Joaillerie brand officially launched on January 1, 2022. She named her first collection after her great-grandmother Alice, inspired by “the constant love her great-grandparents had for one another. the other, living and working side by side as French jewelers”. town of Orléans not far from Paris,” she continues, “As the story was told to me, my great-grandfather Georges wanted to create a really special piece for his 10-year wedding anniversary to Alice. It was during the Art Deco period and he designed a pair of fan-shaped diamond earrings with small diamonds in each fold of the fan, which extended from a central diamond set round bezel. Gallon’s great-grandmother treasured the earrings and wore them with love for her husband and with pride and admiration for the dedication he had always had to creating characterful, expertly detailed and yet crafted jewelry. always easy and comfortable to wear.

Laura eventually inherited the earrings. She explains, “They were first passed on to my father who was born in the apartment above their store in Orléans and grew up there and was extremely close to his grandparents. She continues: “Not only did they inspire the Alice collection, but they are part of the story that took me back to my jewelry heritage after spending my early years in Paris and New York in fashion marketing and public relations.

But each time she wore the earrings, she was reminded of her family’s affairs that ended when World War II forced her great-grandparents to move to Paris. Without a successor, the company closed.

To revive her family’s legacy, she attended the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). She describes her studies in jewelry as “love at first sight” and obtained her diploma as a qualified gemologist and a certificate in jewelry design. She was hired by a jewelry manufacturer in Los Angeles where she worked in design and production, gemstone sourcing, website and social media management, learning everything she could before launching. her first collection, “but it didn’t feel right – it was based on my time in fashion and although fine jewelry, it didn’t evoke the same passion as Alice’s earrings .

She revamped the collection and began to focus on the inspirations of Art Deco designs and the times when her great-grandparents designed and lived them and reinvigorated them for the modern jewelry collector. Fan earrings are the main influence, but they too have been reimagined in sapphires as well as diamonds. These are classics that have stood the test of time. Other pieces are set with colored gemstones or mother-of-pearl inlays. The pieces range from geometric and angular silhouettes to more fluid silhouettes that evoke the Paris of the 1920s and 30s, from architectural details to the new freedom that women had as they danced the night away in raised hems and dresses that moved and flowed with the wearer.
